A New Year, A New Legacy
January always feels like a clean slate — a time to refresh, refocus, and recommit. But this year, instead of talking about resolutions, I want to talk about relationships.
Specifically, the ones that lift us, shape us, and guide us forward: mentors and protégés.
In my own career, I can trace nearly every defining moment back to someone who believed in me, challenged me, or pushed me to think bigger. Now, as I step further into my coaching and leadership work, I’m realizing that mentorship isn’t just about giving back — it’s about growing forward.
The Power of Mentorship
Mentorship is where experience meets potential. It’s not about hierarchy — it’s about humanity.
Every conversation, every introduction, every “you’ve got this” moment has the power to change the trajectory of someone’s career. And just as mentees gain insight, mentors rediscover purpose.
In programs like Women in Stone (WiS), WIFI, and NAWIC, I’ve seen firsthand how mentorship transforms not just individuals, but entire communities. It builds bridges, fosters confidence, and reminds us all that we are part of something larger.
And coming up on Monday, January 26, during TISE (The International Surface Event), there’s a mentorship-focused session that I’m eager to attend. It’s one of those standout moments in the industry where ideas meet action, and I’m looking forward to learning from peers who are as committed to growth as I am.
If you’re joining TISE, let’s connect there — mentorship isn’t just a topic; it’s a practice we live out in spaces like these.
Why You Need a Protégé
Many seasoned professionals underestimate their impact. You don’t need a title to be a mentor — you just need time, empathy, and intention.
Here’s what having a protégé teaches you:
Perspective. Seeing your industry through fresh eyes brings new energy to your work.
Patience. Teaching reinforces your ability to slow down and articulate your process.
Purpose. When you share your story, you remind yourself how far you’ve come — and how much value your experience holds.
When you mentor, you multiply impact. You turn your knowledge into someone else’s opportunity.
Lessons from My Mentorship Journey
I’ve mentored dozens of women and professionals through WiS, WIFI, and NAWIC, and every relationship has taught me something new.
Sometimes it’s guiding a student through their first interview; other times it’s helping someone rebuild confidence after a setback.
What I’ve learned most: mentorship is a two-way street. My protégés have challenged me, inspired me, and reminded me why I love this industry. They’ve shown me that leadership isn’t just about direction — it’s about connection.
How to Start Mentoring in 2026
Be intentional: Don’t wait for a formal program. Reach out to someone you admire or someone who reminds you of your younger self.
Start small: One meaningful conversation matters. Mentorship doesn’t require a long-term commitment upfront.
Share honestly: The best mentors are real. Be vulnerable. Tell the stories you wish you’d heard earlier.
Celebrate small wins: Progress matters. Recognize both your mentee’s wins and your own growth in the process.
If you lead a team, mentorship is one of the smartest investments you can make. It builds culture, fosters retention, and deepens loyalty — three things no marketing budget can replicate.
When people feel seen, they stay. When they feel supported, they grow.
Mentorship transforms turnover into teamwork, and competition into collaboration.
Mentorship isn’t a task; it’s a legacy. It’s how we ensure that the wisdom and courage of today become the foundations of tomorrow.
This year, as you plan your goals and growth strategy, ask yourself: Who can I lift as I climb?
And if you’ll be at TISE on January 26, let’s lean into those conversations in person — because real connection happens in rooms like that.
